I went to art college as a full-time 'mature student' after working for 5 years in a local government office. From 1964-1966 I studied on an art foundation course at Avenham School of Art, Preston; and from 1966-1969 the Diploma in Art and Design at Exeter College of Art. Since then, I've exhibited at various galleries in the north-west; but sold most of my work through Tib Lane Gallery in Manchester, from 1973 to 2007 - when the gallery closed due to retirement.
I paint directly from nature mainly in the Millom area (Cumbria) and try to portray the changing scene before me with a solid composition but without the latter being too obtrusive.
Reviews: "... But there is a quality beyond the composition. Shapes have a pellucid clarity. Yet the tones are muffled. Grass, trees, water and sky are subdued and moulded into a pearly serenity. There is a feel of Poussin's solidity, yet Corot's delicacy. But most of all there is the feel of the landscape outside. It takes the paintings to make you see around Preston the soft trees, sprinkle of yellow cow-parsley, hovering sky, or the coral glow of a brick wall. " Merete Bates, the Guardian, September 19, 1972
"... There is a wholly delightful exhibition of the work of Jim Billsborough, consisting mostly of small intimate oils. His style belongs to the European tradition of classical landscape following the artistic formulae of Claude, and later Corot ..." Jane Clifford, Daily Telegraph, 1973
